What Happens If You’re Injured in An Uber

With the tap of your finger, an Uber driver can be at your door in minutes. No need to make a phone call or even give them the address. Between the ease, speed, and lower prices, Ohio residents are choosing ridesharing services more and more often. Although they have been around for years, it was not until recently that state law required ridesharing services to hold the same insurance regulations as taxi companies. Starting December 2015, Uber and Lyft drivers must carry commercial automotive insurance in Ohio. Coverage differs between companies depending if you have been hit by a driver or if you are a passenger.

Uber’s accident coverage

Getting in a car accident with an Uber driver is different than for Lyft. Uber driver’s insurance covers up to $1 million per incident which covers both the passenger and the other vehicle involved. The company policy also covers up to $1 million for uninsured drivers. For accidents caused by Uber drivers without a passenger, then the insurance will cover up to $25,000 for property damage, $50,000 bodily injury per person, and $100,000 for bodily injury per accident.

Lyft’s accident coverage

Lyft’s auto insurance coverage covers injured passengers up to $1 million per accident for both insured and uninsured drivers. For those hit by a Lyft driver, the coverage restrictions are different. If a Lyft driver hits you the accident would be covered by the driver’s personal insurance. Any leftover costs are covered by Lyft by up to $25,000 for property damage, $50,000 bodily injury per person, and $100,000 bodily injury per accident. In summary:

  • For injured passengers: Up to $1 million per incident; and
  • For injured drivers: Kicks in after the driver’s personal insurance and pays up to $100,000 per incident.
